I was looking at a way to create a perfect (or near to perfect) means to check if an email is valid...
Though I have been learning the concept and tricks of regular expressions, I was wondering if it was better to create a custom-means to check if an email is valid using for-loops and comparison checks. I ask this, because after looking at wikipedia's interpretation of valid and invalid emails,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_address , the regular expression may be rather complex.
Example:

If any one knows which is faster (in terms of processing), more efficient, and/or effective, or if anyone may provide a link for me to learn, it would be greatly appreciated.

It is completely overkill. Doing this in "normal" code will also be long for absolutely nothing. You don't need to validate for perfect email addresses. You also don't need to worry about speed / efficiency. This is called premature optimization, and you shouldn't do it. You're just wasting your time with little things like this when you should be working on your app / project itself.
Here's a good regex you can use
\b[A-Z0-9._%+-]+@[A-Z0-9.-]+\.[A-Z]{2,4}\b
Here's a better one that will match 99% of the emails

I always use this regular expression for email validation:
^[a-z0-9_\\+-]+(\\.[a-z0-9_\\+-]+)*@[a-z0-9_\\+-]+(\\.[a-z0-9_\\+-]+)*\\.([a-z]{2,4})$
I don't know whether it's perfect but I find it do the job.

The regular expression is complex, but the regular expression parser in JavaScript is robust and powerful, validating an e-mail is complex, and it's only going to be done on an irregular basis.
So if it takes 1ms or 100ms, the end user really won't see a difference in client side validation, although my guess would be that it's closer to the 1ms.

Depending on which browsers you need to support, and assuming you're requesting emails with a regular input
tag, you could leave it up to the browser:
<input type="email" value="" name="email" />
If it has to be submitted, add a required
attribute too.
Any recent browser won't allow the form to submit it without the input being a valid email, safe to assume that browser vendors have pretty robust email validation in place.
I'm assuming you're already validating emails on the server side anyway, right?
