If I try to merge two cells say C7 and C8 after a table is created in excel, the data, format gets corrupted. All the table formatting vanishes. Is it a limitation of the module?

I found t finally!
After you format your table with excel "Format as Table" click on design. There you can remove "Header Row" which cannot be deleted in any other way. In addition, on the second section of design menu you will see "Convert to Range" if you click on that, that auto-table goes away but formatting stays and that is what I want.
You can also change the table colors by "Page Layout" menu and "Colors".

No. It is a limitation of Excel. You cannot merge cells in a table.
Nevertheless, Excel::Writer::XLSX should probably issue a warning or prevent this from happening. I'll look into that.
