Spring: Map of beans, trying to inject dependency in the another bean, getting null pointer

Question

I am trying to create the map of the beans in the spring by the following piece of configuration.

<util:map id="utilBeansMap" map-class="java.util.HashMap">
        <entry key="getFlightsLogger">
            <bean
                class="com.test.package.bean1" />
        </entry>
        <entry key="getOnDLogger">
            <bean
                class="com.test.package.bean2" />
        </entry>
    </util:map>

And then injecting this Map as a Resource in another bean (say UserSerice) using

 @Resource(name = "utilBeansMap")
 private Map<String, BaseUtilBean> utilBeansMap;

But I am getting null pointer when I am trying to get bean from this map.

I looked at the logs. Logs shows that this map bean get initialized, but by the time when UserService starts initiating this map bean is already destroyed.

So it seems like you think Spring can inject

@Resource(name = "utilBeansMap")
private Map<String, BaseUtilBean> utilBeansMap;

before it actually creates the object.

That's not how it works. Spring creates the instance through reflection, then, again through reflection, finds the @Resource target field and sets it. If you need to do initialization with your injected field, use a @PostConstructannotated method.

Any method (there are rules for the method definition) annotated with @PostConstruct will be called after the container is finished initializing the bean. If you had a constructor like

public MyClass() {
    BaseUtilBean bean = utilBeansMap.get("theKey");
    // do something with bean
}

this wouldn't work because utilBeansMap would be null. Instead, you could refactor to

public MyClass() {
    // do stuff you know doesn't use injected fields
}
@PostConstruct
public void init() {
    BaseUtilBean bean = utilBeansMap.get("theKey");
    // do something with bean
}

Spring will instantiate your bean, inject the fields, and then call init().
