Hadoop command , hadoop fs -ls is throwing retrying connect to server error?

When I type hadoop fs -ls, I get the following error messages:

deepak@deepak:~$ hadoop fs -ls

Can you check your Namenode status. Put 'jps' in the namenode machine and check its status. It May be because of Namenode down.
