Mule: How can project configs cause such misleading SAX errors?

Question

I've fixed the problem below, but since I've hit this more than once and wasted time on it, I'd like to better understand the chain of events that cause the misleading error.

Scenario:

Mule throws a giant SAX exception parsing your XML, indicating unexpected content
But the XML is fine, it works OK in another project
If you add dependencies etc, eventually this project will accept the XML as well

The *flavor" of the error is: (full stack below)

org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: cvc-complex-type.2.4.a:
Invalid content was found starting with element 'zendesk:config'. One of ... is expected.

Where zendesk:config can vary, and where it's prefix and xsd are correctly defined in the XML header.

In comparing projects that do and don't work with the same XML, I see these differences:

mulesoft-project.xml has an additional muleExtension
pom.xml has extra inclusions and dependencies
.classpath has some extra classpath entries, kind="var" path="M2_REPO/..."
target/mvn-eclipse-cache.properties has some extra entries

But how do these differences give such a horribly unhelpful stack trace?

The schema definitions (XSD files) for components that are not part of the Mule core, such as the Zendesk connector, are included in the dependencies. When you see an error message stating Failed to read schema document / could not find the document, it is usually the case that you forgot to include required dependencies. So, in addition to declaring the namespace in the flow file, the parser needs to find an XSD document for that namespace to parse the XML.
