Unable to ssh into Amazon EC2 instance

Question

I have added my public key to the authorized_keys in the EC2. But am unable to ssh into it until i explicitly mention the private key to be used.

What might be the possible error?

As per the trace , the allowed authentication scheme is with using a public key file (extension: .pem). You can locate that in the EC2 console tab listed in the instance details page. The correct way to login hence would be :

ssh -i <public key file> ubuntu@xx.xx.xx.xx
