so I'm working on a scraper using the scrapy library, and as an ease of use thing I'd like to have it grab it's start urls from a .csv file. I've done some research on the topic and I believe it's correctly grabbing the url from the .csv, but I'm getting some strange errors. If anyone could take a look and give me an idea of what I'm doing wrong that would be great. My spider looks like this, and my Item is pretty basic, because I don't really use it for anything. Eventually, I'll store information back into the item so that I can write it back to a .csv, but for now I just want to get the crawl working.
from scrapy.spider import BaseSpider
from scrapy.contrib.spiders import CrawlSpider, Rule
from scrapy.contrib.linkextractors.sgml import SgmlLinkExtractor
from scrapy.utils.markup import remove_tags
from scrapy.selector import Selector
from scrapy.selector import HtmlXPathSelector
from tutorial.items import BSiteItem
import csv
import sys
class BsiteSPider(CrawlSpider):
name = "Bsite"
l= []
my_file = open("aerospace.csv", "rb")
reader = csv.reader(my_file)
for row in reader:
l.append(row)
print l[0]
start_urls = l[0]
download_delay = 1
rules = [Rule(SgmlLinkExtractor(allow=()), follow=True, callback='parse_item')]
def parse_item(self, response):
text = Selector(response).xpath("//body//text()").re('(\w+)')
for text in text:
newtext = text.encode('utf8')
hxs = HtmlXPathSelector(response)
item = BSiteItem()
if newtext == 'aerospace' or newtext == 'Aerospace' or newtext == 'AEROSPACE':
print 'True'
test = response.url
print test
The csv is a test file with one url in it, http://www.ballaerospace.com.
My output looks like:
scrapy crawl Bsite
['http://www.ballaerospace.com']

Any ideas on what could be going wrong?

The problem is happening on the "extracting the links" step.
Replace:
rules = [Rule(SgmlLinkExtractor(allow=()), follow=True, callback='parse_item')]
with:
rules = [Rule(LinkExtractor(), follow=True, callback='parse_item')]
And, don't forget to import LinkExtractor
:
from scrapy.contrib.linkextractors import LinkExtractor
