Lightbox not working in Opencart

i just downloaded Lightbox and created a new folder in my OPENCART 2.0.3.1 "jquery" folder (which already existed because of some other scripts).

Its located in "catalog/view/javascript/jquery/lightbox"

I then downloaded the header.tpl from "catalog/view/theme/default/template/common" and pasted this line

<link href="catalog/view/javascript/jquery/lightbox/dist/css/lightbox.css" rel="stylesheet">

between </div> and <?php } ?> as the second last row. Its in <body> tag.

And the other one

<script src="catalog/view/javascript/jquery/lightbox/dist/js/lightbox.js"></script>

right under some other <script> and <link> lines where also <script src="catalog/view/javascript/jquery/jquery-2.1.1.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> was located. Its in the <head> tag.

I then uploaded everything and i cannot get it working with the given code

It is because you (as you also say in the question), included two times the css file but not the .js file (dist/js/lightbox.js).

Remove the second 

<link href="catalog/view/javascript/jquery/lightbox/dist/css/lightbox.css" rel="stylesheet">

And replace it by 

<script src="catalog/view/javascript/jquery/lightbox/dist/js/lightbox.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

That shouls make it work, check the console and see that the resources are present there.

EDIT, after you fixed that typo
The js file is mentioned in the PHP if statement <?php if ($categories) { ?> and therefor likely not included in the page. Put the line 

<script src="catalog/view/javascript/jquery/lightbox/dist/js/lightbox.js"></script>

One line below, so after <?php } ?> and it should work.
