match several columns from two files and join the two files

I want to match several columns from two different files and the new output is all columns from file1 joined together with matching from file 2 or return 'null' if they don't match. The files are unsorted. Both files are huge and tab-separated.

file1: (i only show several columns here, there are 50+ columns)

The files are unsorted

This command would only give me the matching line from file2

awk -F '\t' 'NR==FNR{c[$1$2$3$4]++;next};c[$1$2$4$5]>0' file1 file2

i found join command in this forumn but that involed typing out all columns to print all columns from file1. I have 50+ columns and hence typing out all the columns are not practical and prone to errors.

For join there's no need to type all 50 columns+, let some code type that. Suppose join's -o option needs to print 60 columns from file #2.

Here's one way to make the repetitive string:

seq -s, 2.01 .01 2.60 | sed 's/\.0/./g'

Output (somewhat abbreviated):

 2.1,2.2,2.3,2.4,2.5,2.6,2.7,2.8,2.9,2.10,2.11,2.12, ... 2.58,2.59,2.60

To use the code, enclose it in $(), (or assign it to a variable), then use join:

join -a 2 -o $(seq -s, 2.01 .01 2.60 | sed 's/\.0/./g') foo bar
