I am trying to create Junit
test for my spring application. I have annotation based configuration with no xmls. When I am running test I receive the following error:

Caused by: org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'entityManagerFactory' defined in com.library.config.DataConfig: Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: javax.persistence.spi.PersistenceUnitInfo.getValidationMode()Ljavax/persistence/ValidationMode;
This is my simple test class:
@RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
@ContextConfiguration(classes = { WebConfig.class, DataConfig.class })
public class BookTest {
@Test
public void testSayHello() {
Assert.assertEquals("Hello world!", "Hello world!");
}
}
This is my DataConfig:
@Configuration
@EnableJpaRepositories(basePackages = { "com.library.repositories" })
@ComponentScan("com.library.entities, com.library.services")
public class DataConfig {
@Bean
JpaTransactionManager transactionManager(EntityManagerFactory entityManagerFactory) {
JpaTransactionManager transactionManager = new JpaTransactionManager();
transactionManager.setEntityManagerFactory(entityManagerFactory);
return transactionManager;
}
@Bean
public LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean entityManagerFactory(DataSource dataSource, Environment env) {
LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean entityManagerFactoryBean = new LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean();
entityManagerFactoryBean.setDataSource(dataSource);
entityManagerFactoryBean.setJpaVendorAdapter(new HibernateJpaVendorAdapter());
entityManagerFactoryBean.setPackagesToScan("com.library.entities");
entityManagerFactoryBean.setJpaProperties(hibernateProperties());
return entityManagerFactoryBean;
}
@Bean
public DataSource dataSource() {
DriverManagerDataSource dataSource = new DriverManagerDataSource();
dataSource.setDriverClassName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
dataSource.setUrl("jdbc:mysql://localhost/library");
dataSource.setUsername("root");
dataSource.setPassword("root");
return dataSource;
}
final Properties hibernateProperties() {
final Properties hibernateProperties = new Properties();
hibernateProperties.setProperty(AvailableSettings.SHOW_SQL, "true");
hibernateProperties.setProperty(AvailableSettings.HBM2DDL_AUTO, "update");
return hibernateProperties;
}
}
And WebConfig.class :
@Configuration
@EnableWebMvc
@ComponentScan("com.library.controllers")
public class WebConfig extends WebMvcConfigurerAdapter {
@Override
public void addResourceHandlers(ResourceHandlerRegistry registry) {
registry.addResourceHandler("/resources/**")
.addResourceLocations("/resources/");
}
@Bean
public InternalResourceViewResolver viewResolver() {
InternalResourceViewResolver viewResolver =
new InternalResourceViewResolver();
viewResolver.setViewClass(JstlView.class);
viewResolver.setPrefix("/WEB-INF/views/");
viewResolver.setSuffix(".jsp");
return viewResolver;
}
}
Why it doesn't work? The application works ok on server.
P.S: My hibernate-core
version is 5.2.2.FINAL
and spring-test 4.3.3.RELEASE
if compatibility is to be taken into consideration.

Firstly, annotate your Test Class with @WebAppConfiguration
as follows:
import org.junit.Assert;
import org.junit.Test;
import org.junit.runner.RunWith;
import org.springframework.test.context.ContextConfiguration;
import org.springframework.test.context.junit4.SpringJUnit4ClassRunner;
import org.springframework.test.context.web.WebAppConfiguration;
@WebAppConfiguration
@RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
@ContextConfiguration(classes = { WebConfig.class, DataConfig.class })
public class BookTest {
@Test
public void testSayHello() {
Assert.assertEquals("Hello world!", "Hello world!");
}
}
Next, verify your dependencies in pom.xml
, as error shows version incompatibility so it's failing to create entityManagerFactory
bean while loading the application context:
Error creating bean with name 'entityManagerFactory' defined in com.library.config.DataConfig: Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: javax.persistence.spi.PersistenceUnitInfo.getValidationMode()Ljavax/persistence/ValidationMode;
For me below dependencies work:
<properties>
<spring.version>4.3.3.RELEASE</spring.version>
</properties>
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-core</artifactId>
<version>${spring.version}</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-web</artifactId>
<version>${spring.version}</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-webmvc</artifactId>
<version>${spring.version}</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-test</artifactId>
<version>${spring.version}</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.hibernate</groupId>
<artifactId>hibernate-core</artifactId>
<version>5.2.2.Final</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.data</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-data-jpa</artifactId>
<version>1.10.6.RELEASE</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>javax.servlet</groupId>
<artifactId>javax.servlet-api</artifactId>
<version>3.0.1</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>mysql</groupId>
<artifactId>mysql-connector-java</artifactId>
<version>5.1.6</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>junit</groupId>
<artifactId>junit</artifactId>
<version>4.12</version>
<scope>test</scope>
</dependency>

Every time you see a NoSuchMethodError
this means that you have incompatible versions of libraries in your classpath. The fact that you experience this only in tests probably means that you have a conflicting test-scoped dependency or that dependency has its own transitive dependencies that conflict with your compile-scoped dependencies.
In you IDE you can search for classes - you should be able to find multiple copies of PersistenceUnitInfo
in different jars. One of them is not compatible with Spring version.
Alternatively you have multiple versions of Spring defined in test and compile scopes.
Maven commands that can help you debugging this:
mvn dependency:tree
mvn help:effective-pom
