I'm using Create React App and want to include bootstrap css into my project. I saw the instructions for including React Bootstrap on the create-react-app github, but I'm looking for just regular bootstrap, not React Bootstrap.
I've installed bootstrap through npm and am including it inside of my index.js file like so
import 'bootstrap/dist/css/bootstrap.css'
This seems to partially work when I run the start script. The fonts appear to be using bootstrap, but that's it, i.e. none of the other Bootstrap CSS appears to work.
I get the following error when tryng to build
Module not found: Error: Cannot resolve module '[object Object]' in /Users/username/Sites/Learning/modular
/src
I'm guessing this has to do with the fonts. I'm having some difficulty modifying the webpack config to allow the bootstrap fonts.
Has anyone been able to achieve this?
I'm using more or less the same webpack config create-react-app ships with. I did, however, modify the CSS loader so that it can load SASS and is capable of SASS/CSS modules. I've tested that simply requiring an entire stylesheet without using CSS modules still works.
var autoprefixer = require("autoprefixer");
var webpack = require("webpack");
var HtmlWebpackPlugin = require("html-webpack-plugin");
var CaseSensitivePathsPlugin = require("case-sensitive-paths-webpack-plugin");
var InterpolateHtmlPlugin = require("react-dev-utils/InterpolateHtmlPlugin");
var WatchMissingNodeModulesPlugin = require(
"react-dev-utils/WatchMissingNodeModulesPlugin"
);
var getClientEnvironment = require("./env");
var paths = require("./paths");
// Webpack uses `publicPath` to determine where the app is being served from.
// In development, we always serve from the root. This makes config easier.
var publicPath = "/";
// `publicUrl` is just like `publicPath`, but we will provide it to our app
// as %PUBLIC_URL% in `index.html` and `process.env.PUBLIC_URL` in JavaScript.
// Omit trailing slash as %PUBLIC_PATH%/xyz looks better than %PUBLIC_PATH%xyz.
var publicUrl = "";
// Get environment variables to inject into our app.
var env = getClientEnvironment(publicUrl);
// This is the development configuration.
// It is focused on developer experience and fast rebuilds.
// The production configuration is different and lives in a separate file.
module.exports = {
// You may want 'eval' instead if you prefer to see the compiled output in DevTools.
// See the discussion in https://github.com/facebookincubator/create-react-app/issues/343.

// We include the app code last so that if there is a runtime error during
// initialization, it doesn't blow up the WebpackDevServer client, and
// changing JS code would still trigger a refresh.

My current thought is this has to do with the font files Bootstrap uses. The config doesn't seem equipped to handle ttf, woff,woff2, or svg files. (svg's seem to get placed into a static folder which maybe messes up the paths?)

I figured it out. create-react-app can require and use bootstrap inside of the JavaScript right out of the box.
My issue is that I also added CSS modules. Webpack was trying to load bootstrap using CSS modules, and it probably had issues because of fonts being required. Requiring other global CSS doesn't produce this issue.
I resolved the issue by adding a rule to my webpack config for CSS filenames ending in .global.css
and altered the rule for CSS modules to ignore any CSS with a file name ending in .global.css
.
I copied the Bootstrap CSS and font file and put them into an assets folder inside of my project directory. I renamed bootstrap.min.css to be bootstrap.min.global.css. I required it from the assets folder.
This is the best solution I've found for mixing CSS modules with global css in webpack.

You have to use relative Webpack import of NPM modules. ~
import '~bootstrap/dist/css/bootstrap.css'
