Question

I'm getting the follow error when trying to run my ASP.NET project. Can anyone advise?

Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Helpers' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040)

I've tried the following based on other answers:

• Installing ASP.NET MVC 4 separately from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30683
• Updating NuGet packages
• Settings System.Web.Helpers Copy Local to True

I faced a similar issue on a Windows server. The problem occurred because the server only had the latest .NET framework installed, while the project was built with an older framework. I explored many solutions, but I finally resolved it by simply installing the following three libraries. I hope this answer will help others facing the same issue in the future.

1. Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 3
2. Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 4 Runtime
3. Microsoft ASP.NET Web Pages (It got installed automatically along with Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 3)

I had this issue and tried all of the same things to try to resolve it. None of them worked. I ended up manually copying the dll file from another project. Put it in the project/bin folder. Several of my extensions had this issue, I'm not sure what caused it.

Select the System.Web.Helpers' in solution explorer than in the property panel change the "Copy Local" setting to "False". This works for me.

I also had this problem when creating a new Razor view. The project was looking for a newer version of the System.Web.Helper and System.Web.WebPages dlls. I solved this issue by editing my web.config and changing the newVersion from 3.0.0.0 to 2.0.0.0. You may also be able to remove these entirely from the web.config as I did.

I had this problem. It was caused when I added a Razor view to a Web Forms project. Because of this action, Visual Studio added in .Net Version 5 and made a whole lot of other modifications to the project.

I fixed the problem by going into Solution Explorer > Pending Changes. I observed a whole heap of unusual files listed. I right-clicked on any of the files and went to Source Control > Undo Pending Changes. I selected the unusual files and Undo Changes and after a rebuild it was fixed.

I've seen these extra files get added (for no apparent) reason at other times also. Some whack-a-doodle thing Visual Studio does for reasons not clear to me.

Referenced version of System.Web.Helpers assembly in project may not be matching with version mentioned in web.config file. Follow below mentioned steps.

1. Check referenced version of System.Web.Helpers.
2. Check web.config file under root of web application and see if there is entry for System.Web.Helpers and verify its same as that of referenced version.
3. Check web.config file under "Views" folder of web application and see if there is entry for System.Web.Helpers and verify its same as that of referenced version.
