Why multiple definition error happens in CUDA .cu files

I'm learning to use CUDA. I wrote two .cu files, one containing the main function and the other serves as a library providing all the other functions. But I met with multiple definition errors when compiling the two .cu files. I show a toy example as follows:

I compile the files using the command:

nvcc *.cu -O3 -o a.out -lm -ccbin=/usr/bin/g++

Then I got error messages like multiple definition of float_to_color(uchar4*, float const*)'.

Otherwise, if I comment one include of the book.h, the compilation will succeed and the program runs correctly. I found that one possible reason is the version of gcc, so I tried with gcc-4.4 and gcc-4.8, but the error happens in both cases. I also tried with g++, but it does not solve this problem. What's wrong with my code? Thank you all for helping me!

You have multiple definitions because the function is in the header file. It means every single translation unit that includes the file will have a copy of the function.

Either move it to an implementation file and link, or mark the function inline.

Further things to improve upon:

  1. Do not place a using namespace directive in a header file, ever. It's a major namespace pollution.

  2. Prefer std::swap to a home-brewed naive swap template.
