I am trying to understand Spring Boot's and JPA's magics. I have the following classes:
Base Asset
class (could also be abstract in my case)
Class Model
inheriting from Asset

I created a Repository where I want to query for findAllAssetsByType()
, but I seems to do something completely wrong.

.
My question is, do I get around custom queries or querydsl in this case? As you can see, I already got it working via @Query("select a from Asset a where type = ?1")
, but that's not using Spring Boots automatic... Lets say I have more Asset Types it seems to me that querying for a specific type is quite cumbersome as I would need to instantiate the appropriate entity type for each query I want to do like:
@Autowire
private ModelRepository mr;
...
List<Model> models = mr.findAll();
It would be much easier todo something like this:
@Autowire
private AssetRepository ar;
...
List<Model> models = ar.findAllByType("models");
Should I use a EntityManager to query? Is there a better way than @Query
? Should I just create a "Asset" table and use a column like "type" instead of defining all Entities?

in your asset class you have not included the column type. Thus, your class should look something like this
@Id
@GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO)
