CSS - Vertical line

I am trying to create an education timeline. There should be a vertical line (red) starting from behind the "graduation cap" and than going through all the timeline-post (green).

This is what I got so far:

You need to apply the pseudo element to the container of timeline posts and not the icon, so you may do this instead :

You may change z-index value depending on your needs (above or below green elements)
