Spring Boot JPA - Access to DialectResolutionInfo cannot be null when 'hibernate.dialect' not set

I have a Spring Boot JPA application. Whenever I attempt to run it, It fails:

Caused by: org.hibernate.HibernateException: Access to DialectResolutionInfo cannot be null when 'hibernate.dialect' not set at org.hibernate.engine.jdbc.dialect.internal.DialectFactoryImpl.determineDialect(DialectFactoryImpl.java:100) ~[hibernate-core-5.3.7.Final.jar:5.3.7.Final]

I have looked at related questions here, but most seem to relate to issues where the DB is not already up, the credentials incorrect, etc. However, I am able to connect just fine with the PSQL client, so this cannot be the issue. I have tried it both with and without the platform and driver specified in my application.properties:

spring.datasource.url=jdbc:postgresql://xxxx/my_db
spring.datasource.username=xxx
spring.datasource.password=xxx
spring.jpa.show-sql=true
spring.datasource.driverClassName=org.postgresql.Driver
spring.jpa.database-platform=org.hibernate.dialect.PostgreSQLDialect

Furthermore, above the error, the application actually prints out the following:

2019-02-15 10:02:40.134  INFO 43204 --- [           main] org.hibernate.dialect.Dialect            : HHH000400: Using dialect: org.hibernate.dialect.PostgreSQL95Dialect

What might be the issue? This application was actually working; however, I switched development machines recently and now cannot connect. I have disabled the firewall on my machine to see if that could be the issue but without success. Again, I am able to connect through PSQL, so I am really not sure what to think.

The stack trace:

For me I need a config class

@Configuration
public class HikariConfig {
    @Autowired
    Environment environment;

@Bean(name = "dataSource")
public DataSource dataSource() {
    HikariDataSource dataSource = new HikariDataSource();
    dataSource.setJdbcUrl(environment.getProperty("spring.datasource.url"));
    dataSource.setUsername(environment.getProperty("spring.datasource.hikari.username"));
    dataSource.setPassword(environment.getProperty("spring.datasource.hikari.password"));
    dataSource.setCatalog("*****");
    /**
     * HikariCP specific properties. Remove if you move to other connection pooling library.
     **/
    dataSource.addDataSourceProperty("cachePrepStmts", true);
    dataSource.addDataSourceProperty("prepStmtCacheSize", 25000);
    dataSource.addDataSourceProperty("prepStmtCacheSqlLimit", 20048);
    dataSource.addDataSourceProperty("useServerPrepStmts", true);
    dataSource.addDataSourceProperty("initializationFailFast", true);

    dataSource.setPoolName(environment.getProperty("microdb.datasource.hikari.poolName"));
    dataSource.setMaximumPoolSize(Integer.parseInt(environment.getProperty("spring.datasource.hikari.maximumPoolSize")));
    dataSource.setMinimumIdle(Integer.parseInt(environment.getProperty("spring.datasource.hikari.minimumIdle")));
    dataSource.setIdleTimeout(Long.parseLong(environment.getProperty("spring.datasource.hikari.idleTimeout")));
    dataSource.setMaxLifetime(Long.parseLong(environment.getProperty("spring.datasource.hikari.maxLifetime")));
    dataSource.setConnectionTimeout(Long.parseLong(environment.getProperty("spring.datasource.hikari.connectionTimeout")));

    return dataSource;
}}

And in application.properties file I setup:

spring.datasource.url=jdbc:oracle:thin:@xxxxxxx:xxx:xxxx
spring.datasource.hikari.username=xxxxx
spring.datasource.hikari.password=xxxxx
spring.datasource.hikari.minimumIdle=5
spring.datasource.hikari.maximumPoolSize=20
spring.datasource.hikari.idleTimeout=30000
spring.datasource.hikari.poolName=HikariCP
spring.datasource.hikari.maxLifetime=2000000
spring.datasource.hikari.connectionTimeout=30000

When I get

Access to DialectResolutionInfo cannot be null when 'hibernate.dialect' not set

Above this error, there is something else was wrong, one time I got:

sql.SQLSyntaxErrorException: Access denied for user 'tenant2'@'localhost' to database 'tenant2'.

Another time is about "serverTimeZone". So my answer is to look the error above, that is your root cause.

In my case, any error which prevents Spring JPA to connect to the DB results in this error, with no specific information. Examples of misconfigurations are:

  • Bad DB URL
  • Bad user/password

And more difficult to detect were the cases where

My SQL server was not configured for an specific timezone, so adding &serverTimezone=xxx (as @Janet already pointed out)

to the DB url solved the issue. e.g

jdbc:mysql://127.0.0.1:3306/dbname?autoReconnect=true&serverTimezone=UTC

Also I experienced problems with SSL credentials one particular environment, and adding &useSSL=false solved the issue. Now my connection URL looks like

jdbc:mysql://127.0.0.1:3306/dbname?autoReconnect=true&serverTimezone=UTC&useSSL=false

The name of property is fine, it's the class that you defined that causes the problem. PostgreSQLDialect is deprecated. Change it into, for example:

spring.jpa.database-platform = org.hibernate.dialect.PostgreSQL95Dialect

which is for postgres 9.5. More info here. If you have other version of postgres, you can find the right version of dialect class.

I believe you have your dialect property set wrong

spring.jpa.database-platform=org.hibernate.dialect.PostgreSQLDialect

should be

spring.jpa.properties.hibernate.dialect=org.hibernate.dialect.PostgreSQLDialect
