Eclipse Oxygen - workspace initial setup NoClassDefFoundError

I freshly downloaded Eclipse Oxygen and tried to create a new directory as a workspace. I was immediately greeted by an error message telling me to look into the /.metadata/.log I attached the log file to this post.

I downloaded regular Eclipse before on my machine, and I was able to select a directory as a workspace with no problems.

I uninstalled all the old Eclipse files on my computer before installing Eclipse Oxygen by searching for all files with Eclipse on my mac and deleting ones that didn't look familiar to me.

I also changed up my JDK so it's version 1.8 instead of version 12.0.1 since that's what the project I'm working on is using. However, my problem lies in the fact I can't even set up a workspace so not sure if that would help resolve the issue.

I expect to be able to create a new directory as a workspace, but I am greeted with an "An error has occurred" message.

javax/annotation/PreDestroy is part of the javax library that in java 8 was included as part of the java jre. In newer versions of java, the javax library was removed from the JRE and must be added as a separate dependancy for anything that requires it. In this case, eclipse oxygen requires the java 8 for it to run and using something newer than java 8 will cause this issue since Oxygen is expecting the javax library to be part of the jre that is running it (which in Java 12 it is not a part of it).

Oxygen is an obsolete release. The simplest solution is to get the current release, 2019-06. While Java 12 is installed, it will be the default on your Mac.
