error: incompatible types: Fragment cannot be converted to SupportMapFragmen

I am trying to create a basic google maps android app. Just after i create the project and obtain API key i am getting this error.

"error: incompatible types: Fragment cannot be converted to SupportMapFragment"

from the line: SupportMapFragment mapFragment = (SupportMapFragment) getSupportFragmentManager().findFragmentById(R.id.map);

Java Code:(Everything is android studio generated)

I was able to fix the problem by changing the dependencies in gradle from 

implementation 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-maps:17.0.0'

to 

implementation 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-maps:16.0.0'
