Getting error running Elephas examples without modifications: (getting that error even with using git version pip install --no-cache-dir git+git://github.com/maxpumperla/elephas.git@master)
Example I've used: https://github.com/maxpumperla/elephas/blob/master/examples/ml_pipeline_otto.py
(I was trying to enable tf.compat.v1.enable_eager_execution() but other code doesn't work with that setting)

This issue occurred because the metrics
(https://github.com/maxpumperla/elephas/blob/master/elephas/spark_model.py#L44) was a list of MeanMetricWrapper
(https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/blob/master/tensorflow/python/keras/metrics.py#L599), which results in what @OverLordGoldDragon said above. The issue is resolved in the newest Elephas release (1.0.0): https://github.com/danielenricocahall/elephas/releases/tag/1.0.0.

The problem appears to revolve around the usage of RDD and SparkWorker-s in spark_model.py
's _fit
, on this line before swapping to TF's resource_variable_ops.py
:
gradients = rdd.mapPartitions(worker.train).collect()
Either per multithreading or using otherwise abstract data structures, TF runtime is intercepted in a manner where TF thinks it's in Eager and calls Eager methods (.numpy()
), but it isn't - hence the error. I highly doubt there's an 'external' workaround to this, but the following edit of TF source could do the trick (below).
The way it works is, basically, brute-forcing almost every possible combination of eager & non-eager operations to evaluate a Tensor, in & out of graph mode.
