Simple MPI code to test MPI_Type_vector crashes with seg fault - why?

I have the following code, which I am using to test how I'm using MPI_Type_vector in another program. I wrote this small test program so that I could check the parameters that I'm giving MPI_Type_vector to make sure they were extracting the correct parts of the array. However, it doesn't seem to work properly - it gives segmentation faults when it runs (even if it does some of the output first) and I can't seem to work out why.

Any ideas?

The code is below. The first function (alloc_3d_int) was provided to me by someone else but has been well tested.

You want to recieve into new, not &new, and send from start, not &start. Force of habit, I know, gets me all the time too.
