Connection to node -1 could not be established. Broker may not be available. Windows and WSL

Question

I'm following a super simple tutorial with minimal config edits. When I try to create a producer in a Java app it cannot find the broker. However when I set up a console producer I can produce and consume via the same broker.

Here is my setup.
server.proerties:

offsets.topic.replication.factor=1

running these two commands sets up consumer/producers that can send messages over kafka

kafka-console-producer.sh --bootstrap-server localhost:9092 --topic first_topic

I'm on a windows machine but is running kafka in WSL2. I have tried to use windows Java version 15 and linux Java 11 for to run the code above but get the same output.

Anyone that has any ideas?

WSL2 runs on a separate network adapter

Since Kafka can run in Windows, you should do that. Or run your Java code from WSL2.
