unable to install mysql2 Gem on Bigsur

I am using ruby 3.0.1p64 and using macOS bigsur 11.04 mysql installed and running

Bundle install asks me to install mysql2

I am trying to install mysql2 gem like this:

sudo gem install mysql2 -v '0.5.3' --source 'https://rubygems.org/'

and I am getting this:

Could this be incompatible with ruby 3.0.1? what library should I install so that mysql2 gem get's install

anyone having a suggestion?

Im using Macbook OS Big Sur and this worked for me:

brew install openssl
brew link openssl

  export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/opt/openssl@1.1/lib"
  export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/opt/openssl@1.1/include"
  export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/local/opt/openssl@1.1/lib/pkgconfig"

bundle config --local build.mysql2 "--with-ldflags=-L/usr/local/opt/openssl/lib"

bundle install

I installed mysql2 prior to bundle install and deleted the folder called .bundle prior to install:

gem install mysql2 -v '0.5.3' -- \
 --with-mysql-lib=/opt/homebrew/Cellar/mysql/8.0.25_1/lib \
 --with-mysql-dir=/opt/homebrew/Cellar/mysql/8.0.25_1 \
 --with-mysql-config=/opt/homebrew/Cellar/mysql/8.0.25_1/bin/mysql_config \
 --with-mysql-include=/opt/homebrew/Cellar/mysql/8.0.25_1/include

Now I am good.

You probably need libmysqlclient-dev Take a look at last comment (https://stackoverflow.com/a/53081763/7205276) on Error installing mysql2: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension thread

  1. Check if openssl installed.
  2. install it if is not installed. brew install openssl
  3. link it. brew link openssl

you will get something like this.

 ➜ brew link openssl
Warning: Refusing to link macOS provided/shadowed software: openssl@1.1
If you need to have openssl@1.1 first in your PATH, run:
echo 'export PATH="/usr/local/opt/openssl@1.1/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.zshrc

For compilers to find openssl@1.1 you may need to set:
export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/opt/openssl@1.1/lib"
export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/opt/openssl@1.1/include"

For pkg-config to find openssl@1.1 you may need to set:
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/local/opt/openssl@1.1/lib/pkgconfig"
  1. Copy
  export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/opt/openssl@1.1/lib"
  export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/opt/openssl@1.1/include"

and

  export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/local/opt/openssl@1.1/lib/pkgconfig"

then run it.

  1. bundle install again

It works in on my projects.

UPDATE:

  1. export LIBRARY_PATH=$LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/opt/openssl/lib/
  2. bundle install

might works.
