Node ERR Code 1 - Unable to start react app

Question

I'm trying to run an old project of mine. I used a lot of dependencies and they are all out of date. I was trying to update them but it seems like I can't unless I install node modules first. But I'm unable to do that as I'm receive a ERR! Code 1.

This was a project I started last year and was on another PC. Now I'm using a Mac and have downloaded the LTS of Node 16.13.0. I believe the version I used about a year ago was 12.x.x but not quite sure.

Would downgrading versions help? I am simply trying to run npm start but I can't as I'm getting:

react-scripts start sh: react-scripts: command not found

Did you run npm install before running npm start?

Try this:

1. Remove node_modules directory if exists
2. Run npm install
3. Run again npm start

If the error persist, you can try to add a new step before npm install where you should try to remove the package-lock.json file.
