How to keep current view in ViewFlipper when changing orientation

Question

Is there any good way of keeping the current view in the ViewFlipper while sill being able to load the layout-port folder? Maybe with onRetainNonConfigurationInstance()? If so, how would I go about implementing it? I tried someones solution of putting:

android:configChanges="orientation|keyboardHidden"

in the Manifest.

The problem with that is that Android then ignores my layout-port folder which rearranges the input field and buttons.

Try saving which tab you're on in the ViewFlipper when your screen orientation changes by overriding onSaveInstanceState

Then in your onCreate, try the following

        int flipperPosition = savedInstanceState.getInt("TAB_NUMBER");
        flipper.setDisplayedChild(flipperPosition);
    }
}

Make sure that you call the setDisplayedChild() method on flipper only after you have initialized flipper, by doing something like, for example,

flipper = (ViewFlipper) findViewById(R.id.flipper);

in your onCreate() method. Not doing so might result in a crash.

There is no other way than saving your application state by yourself and loading it after screen orientation change. You can override an onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() method or if you use API 11 or newer use pair of setRetainInstance(boolean) and getLastNonConfigurationInstance()

Here is also an answer whether to use retaining instance or saving it.

There is also possibility that you will inflate your new port-layout by yourself but I think it's not a good idea.
