Cassandra doesn't comply with consistency settings, QUORUM is set but ALL is used

Question

we have a mistake on some read query. Somtimes query fails because it doesn't reached the consistency ALL, but we have asked consistency QUORUM. It's happen only on read query (not write).

Our envrionment is:

• Cassandra: 3.11.5
• Cassandra java driver: 3.6.0
• Cluster replication: RF 3 with DC1 : 1, DC2 : 1, DC3 : 1
• read repair settings: dclocal_read_repair_chance = 0.0, read_repair_chance = 0.0

It's look like https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-7947 but it was fixed a long time ago.

We are issuing the same behaviour on a similar set up.

Cassandra 3.11.5 and Datastax Driver 3.6.0 Read / Write : quorum / quorum Cluster replication: RF 3 with DC1 : 1, DC2 : 1, DC3 : 1 read repair settings: dclocal_read_repair_chance = 0.0, read_repair_chance = 0.0

The logs shows that read request are sometimes performed with CL_ALL when a timeout occurs.

It seems that despite our read_repair_chance set up (0.0) and dclocal_read_repair_chance = 0.0 some requests are performed with CL_ALL. And this is NOT like an asynchronous dclocal_read_repair. The client receive the message "3 replicas were required but only 2 ..."

I also wonder if speculative retry could lead to this behaviour with the "read data protection" ?

I think the problem is that you have dclocal_read_repair_chance = 0.1. This means that for 10% of read requests, the coordinator triggers an asynchronous read-repair within the DC which uses a consistency of ALL.

We recommend that you disable read-repair chance by setting:

    dclocal_read_repair_chance = 0.0

For a bit of background, read_repair_chance and dclocal_read_repair_chance were removed in Cassandra 4.0 (CASSANDRA-13910) so you shouldn't have them enabled.
