Search an exact match in a DataTables table
I want to perform an exact search in a DataTables table across all columns. But it seems that DataTables supports exact regex matching on a column basis, and not globally (you can try here; try e.g. ^Airi Satou$: it is found if you search in the first column, but not globally).
The relevant piece of code is:
table.column(1).search('^' + value + '$', true, false).draw();
This performs the search in column 1, and this works. But the global search doesn't work:
table.search('^' + value + '$', true, false).draw();
More precisely, I use the following function in the initComplete option:

If you want to perform an exact search across all columns, you cannot use the search() function, as this applies your regex term to the data in the entire row at once (it does not test each column one-by-one).
You can see this in action by trying a search using these options:
"search": {

}
For the standard DataTables data set, if you search for a term such as Tokyo, you will find all the records containing that city.
If you use ^Tokyo$ you find no records.
But if you search for tom.*yo, you will find one record, for Donna Snider - because the tom matches part of Customer Service and the yo matches part of Tokyo. This example demonstrates that the overall row is being treated as one string (I'm not sure what - if any - field separator is being used).
If you want a field-by-field exact searcher, you can use the following:

It is case sensitive - so you would have to tweak the comparison if (searchTerm === cellText), if you wanted to support case insensitive searches.
Update
The row data fed into the global search function uses two spaces as its field separator:
Quinn Flynn Support Lead Edinburgh 22 2013/03/03 $342,000
This is stored in the settings object, in the following field (with link to source code in GitHub):
settings.aoData[i]._sFilterRow
You can see where the two spaces are used here, in the source code:
row._sFilterRow = filterData.join(' ');
You could therefore use the search() function by building a regular expression string such as this:
(^Endinburgh$|^Endinburgh | Edinburgh$| Edinburgh )
This handles 4 cases where (a) there is only one field in the table; (b) the field is the first field in the table; (c) it is the final field; (d) it is somewhere in the middle.
(There may be a more compact way to express this regexp.)
Bottom line, however: This relies on an internal DataTables implementation detail (two spaces for the field separator) and therefore it's probably not a good idea to rely on it.
