uBlock Origin custom filters - Why do leading double-pipe symbols not work?

According to this answer, leading double-pipe symbols in the AdBlock scripting syntax serve to match the beginning of domain/host names in URLs.

Why does this work,

! Disable Reddit auto-translation
||reddit.com^$removeparam=tl

but the following throws an error?

! Remove Google shop grids
||google.*##.kSMK2

I found some more potentially relevant information in the uBlock Origin wiki on the usage of leading pipe symbols, but I don't understand what "tokenizable filters" are and a quick Google search didn't turn up anything helpful.

The issue can be reproduced with Firefox 119.0 (64-bit) + uBlock Origin 1.61.2 on Windows 10 Professional (22H2).
