Permanently disable certain keys

I have asked this question on StackExchange/Ask Ubuntu but have got no answers. So I am trying here, hoping for better luck.

The question was asked and answered, before, on StackExhange, but the answer given to this question did not work for me. (I would like to provide a link to this question, but I cannot figure out how. There is no obvious mechanism.)

The proposed answer was to put the line "xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap" in a file ~/.xprofile where .Xmodmap contains lines like

keycode 119 = NoSymbol

I created the specified files (with four lines in .Xmodmap, with keycode numbers 110, 111, 115 and 116) logged out, and logged in again.

No effect. The keys in question were still enabled.

Howecver if I type "xmodmap .Xmodmap" in the terminal window the desired effects seem to result.

What am I doing wrong?

Note that I am running Ubuntu 24.04 with Mate desktop 1.26.2. My laptop is a Hewlett-Packard Elitebook
