VSCode does not correctly display the TERMINAL command in the ribbon and freezes up

I am trying to run a Python program (the code is clearly displayed in VSC) but when I click the TERMINAL command in the command bar at the very top, the terminal split-window which used to open in the middle of the main window opens but does not display the current path. Instead, after ≈30 seconds it freezes, I see the following and am forced to click 'reopen': screenshot of VSC with cursor frozen

I yellow-highlighted the TERMINAL (in the ribbon) with the 'CMD' (I believe that is from the JSON file) and the cursor where the directory would normally appear). I suspect my JSON file is incorrect but it does show the 'CMD' (on the TERMINAL ribbon), so I'm unsure how to correct this problem.

This is my current JSON file: enter image description here

Thanks in advance to all who reply.
