Labeling raster data in canvas of qgis

Question

I have built virtual raster files from a set of Landsat raster data with multiple bands. I succeeded quite easily with the display of the images but have been stumped about labeling those same virtual raster files in the canvas of qgis. When I bring up the layer properties there is no 'labeling' tab to select.

I am after the ability to label these with the layer name so I know which one is which. I tried to use the identify tool but it is quite cumbersome and only works occassionally. Any ideas...am I missing something obvious to the rest of the community?
