hdfs command returns nothing even after i made a folder

i have been trying to implement word frequency count task in hadoop using wsl. but when i try this:

 hdfs dfs -ls /     

it returns nothing even after i made a folder.

i have made sure that hadoop is running by jps command: jps:

6355 SecondaryNameNode
6694 NodeManager
7399 Jps
6122 DataNode
5994 NameNode
6572 ResourceManager

i dont know what to do now. my
