how to join a long format table with a shapefile in QGIS

I am looking to join a long-format table with a polygon shapefile. Each row in the long format table has a date. I would like to then use Temporal Controller using the date field to visualise the different polygons in the different years.

Joining the long-format table to the shapefile would mean that individual polygons would be duplicated. ...which I dont think QGIS likes. When I make the join, it only joins the first time the join field appears.

Please advice how to make this join work.
