Telegram mini app: don't show above message input field

Question

On this page when the user presses the menu button the mini app appears above the menu button and text input field.

Yet the mini app appears in front of the menu button and text input field in all the examples I see online.

Indeed, in my own version--both in the web version on my Android phone--it does the same: it appears above the menu button and input field.

How can I make the mini app appear the menu button and input field as demonstrated in the first link? (Note: In botfather my miniapp mode is set to "compact".)
