Kong nginx worker process consumes close to 100 Mb memory when idle

We are using kong api gateway and there are no active users for our module with kong as it’s not yet in production. Still simply running the kong api gateway, its nginx worker process consumes appr. 100 mb of memory (no api hits).

Though kong documentation recommends allowing for around 500MB of memory allocated per worker process, we need to understand folloing:

  1. Why does it consume this large memory in idle state.?
  2. Is there any way (any config option) to reduce this memory consumption for nginx process.
