Embedding graphics files and .pdfs into an excel spreadsheet

I'm building an excel spreadsheet that needs to contain supporting documents, primarily .pdf and .jpeg of scans. Each supporting document will be in a unique cell, and the supporting document will enlarge to become readable if the cell is clicked on. Because the users of this spreadsheet are in different parts of the world, and connectivity to a central server is problematic, part of the requirements state that the supporting documents should be embedded in the excel file itself. The functionality: Insert>Pictures>Place_in_Cell>This_Device>Insert provides something similar for many types of graphic files, but not for .pdf.

I'm stuck, and would appreciate any advice! Thank you, Dave

  1. Insert > Object
  2. Select Type of Object
  3. Browse and Select Object

You'll have to resize the cell manually to fit the object (unless you can write VBA)

Inserting like this will display the PDF directly in the worksheet, but with lower visual quality. You can double click the image to open the embedded file in a PDF viewer.

A more compact approach is to check the Display as icon option, which still embeds the file, but displays a customizable file icon instead of a preview of the contents.
