The categories of my contact data in Outlook, hosted on an Exchange server, disappear every 4 to 6 months. When this happens I see that lastChanged date of 95% of my contacts is around the same date and time. And the remaining 5% few hours or days later.
And I suspect that some birthday data are regularly set off by a day too, as I cannot get rid of random errors.
After talks with the Exchange server hoster I see no way to determine which app (likely on the Android phone) gets in the way. And even if I did find out, I could not change its behavior.
I wonder about the right tactic for next steps
backup the whole lot of contacts in Outlook. This is unreliable as it loses data (extended characters, pictures)
use VBA and hide the affected properties (category and birthday) elsewhere in the contacts.
copy contacts to another folder for backup. Unfortunately this duplicates contacts on the Android phone.
So the obvious choice seems option b. Any other thoughts on that approach? Any hints on where to "hide" / backup properties?
Talks with Exchange server hoster shows serverside logging can yield only deviceID. No applicationId as I had hoped for.
